Newsflash: We need your (financial) help!

While LifeSIGNS has managed to exist for four years and do a great deal of awareness raising on very little money at all, we are asking for money now in one bid to raise enough to cover the cost of printing our Self-Injury Awareness Booklet. We have tried to get people to advertise in return for a donation but this has been unsuccessful so we are turning to you!

We need to raise £2000-£2500. That means we need 25 people to raise £100 each, or 50 to raise £50 each, or 100 to raise £25 each, or 1000 people to raise £2.50 each!

We are already raising money through everyclick, but it's just not enough. If you want to find out more about what you can do, please go to our website and look at the first item of news.

Any little amount would be much appreciated and our booklet will finally be available in full glossy colour, bigger and better than ever, and cheap at just £5 for 100 pages of expert advice!

Please read our full article for fund-raising ideas and how to send funds and donations directly to us.

Self-Injury Scar help from the Red Cross

I was really pleased to come across this article:

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2-2501206,00.html

At LifeSIGNS we often mention this valuable service that the Red Cross provides, and it's really good to hear such someone's experiences and how they really have been helped.

I hope we can develop stronger links with the Red Cross, and let people know that there are things that can be done about self-injury scars.

Self-Injury Help in Wales

Just a quick one from me - searching the news, and came across an article about a new 5-year self-harm project in Wrexham (Wales):

(warning, there is a picture of a blade)

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/north_east/6171669.stm

This scheme is going to be for 11-18 year olds. The article doesn't go into much detail, so I don't have a lot to say!

LifeSIGNS calls for Translations help - encountering Self-Injury in Multi-cultural Britain

As we are going from strength to strength as a charity, it is time to expand in our scope and focus and so we are currently undergoing a project to help improve resources and increase awareness on self-injury in black and minority ethnic groups.

After reading many research reports on self-injury in people from a black and minority ethnic background, and being involved in radio discussions on the subject on the BBC Radio Asian Network and BBC Radio 1Extra, LifeSIGNS is spearheading a leading campaign to address equality and diversity in SI resources for people from a black and minority ethnic background.

We recognise that this group have a distinct set of factors that contribute to SI triggers, many of which are poorly identified or treated by general SI services. We also recognise the importance of the difficulties that different cultures may bring, especially for second generation ethnic minorities, and the lack of understanding and even recognition of SI that some of these cultures may have. Inevitably, there is a gap in the provision of SI services for black and ethnic minorities.

Therefore we are hoping to go towards filling this gap by translating some of our resources into at least ten different languages which will hopefully alleviate the language barrier that some individuals may face in getting the help and advice they need. However, to do this, we need the help of as many supporters as we can. We are looking to recruit volunteers who are confidently literate in:

Bangali
Punjabi
Gujerati
Urdu
Arabic
Classical Chinese
Somali
French
Polish
Tamil

Translators do not need to be native speakers, just confident and competent in a high level of knowledge of the language.

If you can help translate one or two short documents into one of the above languages, please contact Janet on Janet@lifesigns.org.uk

Linking to LifeSIGNS

It’s always wonderful to see amazing websites and organisations link to LifeSIGNS, but it seems that many organisations get our details wrong!

We have three details to consider, our name, our strap-line and our web address (URL).

Our name is LifeSIGNS, it is not Life Signs, or Lifesigns. Our name is made up of the word ‘Life’ and the acronym ‘SIGNS’ – because it is an acronym, it needs to be in capitals! So our name is LifeSIGNS, one word, with a capital L and SIGNS in capitals; no other spelling will suffice!

But what does ‘SIGNS’ stand for then? That’s when our strap-line comes in.

SIGNS stands for Self Injury Guidance & Network Support. Because there’s no ‘A’ in the word, it’s important to use ‘&’ instead of the word ‘and’ OK?

So, we are LifeSIGNS: Self Injury Guidance & Network Support, because we are a ‘network organisation’ that gives ‘guidance and support’ around the subject of self-injury.

Our web address, our URL is www.lifesigns.org.uk – see how simple that is? We’re an organisation in the UK, so we are lifesigns.org.uk OK?
