On Treating Depression with Poetry

http://www.guardian.co.uk/g2/story/0,3604,1462827,00.html

This article refers to the launch of an organisation called Mental Fight Club - the first rule of which is that you can tell everyone about it. It is based on Ben Okri's epic poem "Mental Fight" - apparently you can read it and be cured :)

Suicide and Deliberate Self-Harm - an article from the British Medical Journal

http://bmj.bmjjournals.com/cgi/content/full/330/7496/891?ehom

This article appears in the latest edition of the BMJ and is worth a read as this is what doctors generally will be reading. It links suicide and deliberate self-harm more than I think is fair, however it is written from the point of view of trying to prevent suicide. The treatment advice I think is valid for self-harm itself; however I think that the fact that the purpose is focused on preventing suicide may indicate that doctors are still fairly unsure of how to deal with self-harm that lacks suicidal intent.

Just an update for you.

need2know has made LifeSIGNS its 'site of the week' on thier home page, which is nice, and they also provide rateable links in their Mental Health section, be sure to vote for LifeSIGNS!

I'm going to Cambridge in the morning to deliver some SI Awareness training to a Women's Organisation, so I hope that they find my presentation useful. Then I'll be having dinner with an ol' school friend, so that'll be a nice day out.

On Wednesday, the Management Committee of LifeSIGNS will meet online; I guess the main topic of conversation will be fund raising (in order to help us become a Charity).

More news in the April Newsletter, out later.

I've given up smoking now, and I'm having trouble keeping these darn nicotine patches alight....

Wish me luck.
